Dr. Rachel Penney has been at the McKeesport/White Oak location since January 2016, when she took over for Dr. Letham. Changes since taking over have included new equipment, renovation and addition of a second exam room, update to frame collections carried, and majority of insurances are accepted. In December 2020, Dr. Penney also took over Optical Images in Bethel Park at 4706 Library Rd. Changes that were made at this office included adding more staff, more hours including evening and weekends, new frame selections, and more.
Dr. Penney was born and raised in Windsor, Ontario, Canada. She attended Illinois College of Optometry in Chicago, Illinois and graduated Cum Laude in ‘08. Dr. Penney then worked in private practice in Chicago for two years, with a heavy focus on contact lens patients. She then moved to Elkins, WV where she spent two years working at a private practice that specialized in ocular disease treatment and management, including glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and age related macular degeneration. While she was in WV, she married her husband and their first son was born. Shortly afterwards they moved to Pittsburgh, knowing it was where they wanted to raise a family. Since living in Pittsburgh, Dr. Penney previously worked at a private practice in Bethel Park for 8 years, and also worked at a LASIK center before starting Penney Eye Care.
Dr. Penney’s strengths in optometry include an interest in contact lenses, including specialty contact lenses such as multifocal lenses. She is also confident and knowledgeable regarding ocular disease treatment and management- especially dry eye syndrome, co-management of LASIK and cataract surgery, and providing eye care to children as young as 6 months of age.
Dr. Penney’s free time is mostly spent at a hockey arena, baseball field or soccer field cheering on her two boys. She also is a very big Pittsburgh Penguins fan, an avid reader, thinks she missed her true calling as a DJ, and loves to spend time on a lake.
Dr. Anderson was born in Kane, PA in northwestern Pennsylvania. She attended Slippery Rock University then Pennsylvania College of Optometry in Philadelphia, PA. She then worked in Mississippi while her husband pursued his PhD in English.
While in Mississippi, Dr. Anderson worked in a private practice that handled a good mix of medical optometry and routine eye care, including specialty contact lens fits and pediatric exams. After returning to the Pittsburgh area in 2017, she joined a busy ophthalmology practice in McMurray, PA. She worked alongside the ophthalmologist managing referrals to evaluate diabetes, cataracts, glaucoma and macular degeneration; as well as treat eye emergencies, red eyes, infections, and double vision.
She lives with her husband and 3 year old son in Pleasant Hills. When asked what her hobbies are, she stated “I miss hobbies. I have a 3 year old son, my hobbies have mostly disappeared haha!” But she enjoys golfing, crafting, and watching sports-especially football and baseball (Dr. Penney plans to ensure she learns to add hockey to that list). Penney Eye Care is delighted to have Dr. Anderson due to the experience she brings in medical optometry, contact lenses, eye emergencies, and most importantly the thorough care and compassion she gives each of her patients.
